Presentatie Tim Ayres @ We Like Art, 2023

A working day will be flurries of activity interspersed with sitting, thinking, waiting for paint to dry. I use a glazing technique with acrylic paints, so a layer of paint, wait for it to dry, another layer, another wait, etc. One has to keep a close eye on things – not too little, not too much… When is a colour the colour I feel it should be? It really is probably quite shocking how much time I spend watching paint dry…

Welke thema’s zijn belangrijk in jouw werk?

The question remains, that if poetry is about space, what does that space look like…?

Waar ben je opgegroeid en opgeleid?

I grew up in a small English market town, Shrewsbury. Studied at Loughborough College of Art, did an MA at Chelsea School of Art and then moved to Amsterdam to do the Rijksakademie.

Wat inspireert je?

I’m always interested in how what we perceive in our peripheral vision is possibly central to our perception.

For me, it’s often a word (or a phrase), which is an image, which is itself an idea, which will tell its own story, perhaps, in the mind of anyone that sees the work. The notion of ‘perhaps’ or ‘possibly’ is crucial for me in whether a painting gets made or not.

Hoe ziet je gemiddelde werkdag er uit?

A working day is fairly work-a-day I guess – I get up, drink probably more coffee that may be good for me; work; get hungry towards dinner-time; go home; sleep; etc…

It’s a simple unit in a building complex of simple units – nothing spectacular. It has heating, which after many years of studios without heating, is a wonderful thing.

Kun je 3 ongewone items opnoemen in je studio?

There’s a long pink dress hanging in a corner, which I bought years ago on Queen’s Day for a possible photo shoot, which raises eyebrows…

Both.

Colour is of utmost importance. I’m loving acrylic paints at the moment…

Waar streef je naar in je werk? Wanneer is een werk voor jou af?

A work is finished for me when it can take care of itself out there in that wide world.

Waarom?

Yes, I have a small collection of things… I have a Brice Marden litho which I’m proud to own. That’s on the wall at the moment. And a Michiel Romeyn photo of a sidewalk where someone got shot. And a beautiful photo from Natascha Libbert of a boy on a rock… Why? Beautiful things; thought inspiring things; possibilities.
