Tim Ayres We Like Art poem

Poem (AU/EA), 2014, acrylic on linen, 75 x 50cm

I’m showing two works. A ‘poem’ painting and a non-text work: When the trembling passes. The poem works are about the possibility of colour being a poem, or poetry, in itself. What can colour, or the combinations of, inspire in the imagination…? What do you see and what do you feel about what you see when you read a colour? Poem (AU/EA) is about a meeting of minds, of two different characters, colour characters.

When the trembling passes is a bit like ‘is the glass half full, or half empty?’. Or snakes and ladders… Is the structure collapsing or re-forming?

I always liked what Willem de Kooning said about art, referring to Monet and his haystack paintings. He said it was absurd for Monet to paint a haystack, but also absurd for him not to do so. I like that absurdity aspect.

And I marry that with my idea that ‘art’ (all arts) is simply about taking (or removing) something from life, having a good look at it, fiddling with it a little and then re-placing it back into life. Hopefully, better for it. Painting for me exists in the space between these thoughts.

Hoe ziet jouw gemiddelde atelierdag er uit?

A working day will be flurries of activity interspersed with sitting, thinking, waiting for paint to dry. I use a glazing technique with acrylic paints, so a layer of paint, wait for it to dry, another layer, another wait, etc. One has to keep a close eye on things – not too little, not too much… When is a colour the colour I feel it should be? It really is probably quite shocking how much time I spend watching paint dry…

Great! And an honour. The Netherlands is rich with great painters (great artists in general), so I’m looking forward to seeing the cornucopia.

Lust for Life heet de tentoonstelling – kun je je daar in vinden?

It hits the spot, really, doesn’t it? That life thing we have – it comes down to the lust for it.

Yep! There’s a colour combination that fascinates me at the moment, so I want to delve into that. And I want to complete a series of works, a fourteen-part painting, about the idea of ‘road movie’. Lots to do, lots of paint to watch drying…
