Het werk van Isabelle Wenzel (Wuppertal, Duitsland, 1982) is volledig eigen en ijzersterk. We schreven al met enige regelmaat over dit aanstormend talent:
Wat maakt haar foto’s zo bijzonder? Er zit een soort gruizige power in die je als een knal voor je kop raakt. De morsige soms wat klunzig geknutselde settings waarin de vaak gezichtsloze ‘modellen’ poseren oogt heel geloofwaardig. De absurde en wrange situaties waarin de modellen ongewone acrobatische poses aannemen of soms opgedwongen lijken te krijgen zijn onweerstaanbaar. Het werk lijkt te gaan over alternatieven voor de klassieke machtsverhouding tussen fotograaf en model en over andere zaken waar je niet zo snel de vinger op legt.
Wenzel: “Ik vraag mezelf af welke impact ik heb op het model als fotograaf en omgekeerd. Ben ik degene die het model stuurt/begeleid en controleert en gezag over haar heeft? Of is het de observaties van het model die mij sturen/domineren?”
Isabelle Wenzel wordt momenteel op talloze plekken opgepikt. Haar werk werd vorige maand nog uitgebreid besproken in het hippe The Hunger Magazine (lees hier meer) en ze is te zien geweest in Duitsland, Italie, Frankrijk, Noorwegen en natuurlijk met een solo bij de fotobeurs Unseen in Amsterdam afgelopen jaar.
Ze was trouwens ook uitgebreid aan het woord op Unseen, zie hier.
“Wenzel has chosen the medium of photography for its ability to “capture the perfect moment. It is able to freeze time, and often results in something magical.” The perfect moment that Wenzel is referring to are her photographs that focus mainly on the physical form of the human body. She often depicts the female body in the most impossible positions.
Often, Wenzel works by herself: She presses the self-release and has only 10 seconds to get into position to take the shot (she sometimes does this up to 50 times per photograph!)
In her work, you can see the traces of performance art, of her former acrobatic training, of her fascination with movement and power symbols and her obsession with the perfect moment.
When asked about where she finds inspiration for her work, one of the Youtube clips Wenzel shared was the video of 14 year old Romanian gymnast, Nadia Comaneci, who at the 1976 Montreal Olympics was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10.0.”
